Research Application

Kisspeptin (metastin) is a peptide encoded by the KISS1 gene that serves as the primary endogenous ligand for the KISS1R (GPR54) receptor and has been extensively researched in laboratory and animal model systems for its central role in modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, including GnRH neuron activity, gonadotropin (LH/FSH) secretion patterns, pubertal development timing, reproductive cycle regulation, and metabolic-reproductive integration.

Storage

Kisspeptin (also known as metastin) is a peptide derived from the KISS1 gene that acts as the endogenous ligand for the G-protein coupled receptor KISS1R (also called GPR54). It was initially identified in studies of metastasis suppression but has since become a major focus in neuroendocrine research due to its central role in regulating reproductive physiology in laboratory models.

In experimental settings, kisspeptin and its shorter analog Kisspeptin-10 (KP-10) are used extensively to investigate the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. It stimulates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in the hypothalamus, leading to downstream release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in animal models such as rodents, sheep, and non-human primates. This makes it a key tool for studying the mechanisms of puberty onset, pulsatile gonadotropin secretion, steroid feedback regulation (negative and positive), and fertility control in non-human systems
